U.S. Army Capt. Joseph C. Driscoll was, while in the United States, assigned to the 87th Infantry Division, 312th Medical Battalion.

Some times before going overseas, he was then transfered to the 7th Armored division and put in charge of the Combat command B Medical battalion for B Compagny.

After the Battle of the Bulge, the 7th Armored Division issued this citation :

“Captain Joseph C. Driscoll distinguished himself by meritorious achievement in connection with military operations against the United States on Dec. 20, 1944 in the area of Laroche, Belgium.

During the fierce action at Laroche, Capt. Driscoll braved heavy enemy action to supervise the operations of his medical company. When overwhelming pressure on our defense made it necessary to withdraw, he led his men in the movement of 75 wounded to safety. The great courage and ability he displayed under the most dangerous conditions reflect high credit upon himself and the armed forces."

The Army Action report gave the following information :

“The Germans were reported to be in close proximity to the Division Trains and the entire battalion with the exception of the clearing section at Beho, moved to new localities. "Hq. & Hq. Company" moved to 2 miles west of Laroche, "A" Company to Genes, "B" Company at Laroche and "C" Company at Marcourt, all in Belgium”
